Good, there are always a certain number of flaws with these piece, they were made to be used, this piece has a few holes in the red wool background, see photos and there is some damage to one of the samurai faces and hands, see photos. The cream cotton backing is smudged and has stains, see photos. It is still a very charming, unusual piece.
This is a charming old piece, an uchishiki (Buddhist Altar Cloth) from the late Meiji Era, around 1900 The red fabric is wool and the design is hand embroidered. The design is interesting, on the right a pair of pilgrims and on the left a group of samurai appearing to be hiding behind the trees. Wonderful collectabele item!
