This is a lovely stoneware chawn from Karatsu kiln, in Kyushu. The iron oxide design is of rice ears and the base is signed by the potter. Karatsu chawan are among the three most typical types of pottery used in the tea ceremony in Japan, the other two are Hagi and Raku wares. Wonderful to collect!!!!
